The Ionian Blue Hotel occupies a peaceful position just above the sea on the East coast of the island. Despite the tranquil setting, the hotel is conveniently situated between Lefkas Town and Nidri and just a few minutes drive from the nearest village.
Nikiana is a fishing village around 3km to the north of the hotel. The small port is home to many colourful caiques, which sell their catch to the few tavernas on the quay side. Tucked into the corner, between the harbour and the pebble beach, is a traditional family taverna. Here the tables are shaded by thick vines and a sea breeze keeps you cool even on the hottest of days.
Ten minutes drive further on, is Lefkas Town, the capital of the island. The intriguing mix of Venetian and British colonial architecture gives a clue to the town's turbulent past. On the main street are a good variety of restaurants and bars, as well as shops selling local crafts and some very appealing hand made jewellery. The sheltered position of the town, surrounded by lagoons and salt flats has made it a haven for yachts. For the best view of the yachts coming and going, stop for a drink in Pluto, a bar situated on a floating barge on the town quay.
Ten minutes south of the hotel is the town of Nidri, the largest resort on the island. Here you can find a good variety of restaurants, ranging from traditional Greek to modern Italian. For the active amongst you, Nidri offers wake boarding, ringos, parascending, dinghy sailing and kayaking. Nidri quay is also home to many of the boats offering tours to the other islands, take a stroll along the quay and see which of the itineraries takes your fancy.
If you can drag yourself away from lounging by the pool, the Ionian Blue Hotel
is an ideal base for exploring the island. Whether you wish to take a stroll
through the narrow lanes of Lefkas Town, take a car up into the mountains, or
explore the beaches of the West coast, none is more than half an hour away.
