Lefkas - The White Island: “Land of Myth and Legend”
Here are some hints and tips to help you on your holiday:
- Greece is a full member of the EU, so EU citizens do not need a visa to visit.
- Local currency is the Euro (€).
- Local time is two hours ahead of UK time. Summer time (BST in the UK) starts and finishes on the same dates across Europe, so Greece is always 2 hours ahead.
- Shops follow usual Mediterranean opening hours: morning and evenings with a siesta after lunch - generally 0800-1300 and then 1700-2000.
- Don't get too hung-up on spelling, especially for place names. All latin-alphabet signs are phonetic translations from the Greek - hence Sivota can be variously written as Syvota, Civota or Cyvota. The real name is Συβοτα. If it sounds about right, it's probably the place you're looking for.
- There's no equivilent to the letter 'B' in the Greek alphabet, so Μπ is used.
- The international dialing code for Greece is +30. The local code for Lefkas is 26450. Mobile numbers start 69. When dialling a Greek number internationally, you don't drop any numbers from the code.
- Credit cards are not always accepted, but there are cash machines available in the major towns and at the airport.
